From classmates to soulmates, Hunter Knuckles and Anna Sams share the most adorable and surprising "How We Met Story." Engaged before twenty years old and forever grateful for the Manatee High School drama performance that initially brought them closer together--these two kids share an incredibly unlikely narrative for this day and age: they're high school sweethearts!
Their courtship has been in the works for the past three years, and they've been talking about marriage for nearly their entire relationship. The hurry to make it official was prompted when Hunter received orders that he would be serving the Marines in Okinawa, Japan for the next two years! 
 
 
The Proposal 
Bradenton, Florida has a profound significance for the couple. It's where they grew up and fell in love. The locale was an especially important factor for Hunter as he considered where he would propose. After conducting careful research, Hunter surprised Anna with a magical waterside dinner at PIER 22, the landmark restaurant and venue in the heart of downtown Bradenton, Florida; he upped the wow factor when he got down on one knee as the sun set over the Manatee River. "I'm a native around here, and I've seen the sunset from just about every angle around town, the sunset was absolutely stunning... that night and Anna was gorgeous," Hunter said. "She had her suspicions," Hunter affirmed. "Our first Christmas together, he gave me a promise ring, Anna remembered... and for it to finally be official is really cool. It's still the glowy stage, and I can't stop staring at my ring," she giggled. 
Hunter had been planning to ask for weeks, and he was anxious to pop the big question that night, but what truly had him sweating was earlier when he went to ask Anna's father for her hand. "He was happy I asked, but I was really nervous," Hunter said. 
 
They've Set A Date!
These two crazy kids are getting married! April 13, 2019.
 
 
 
Marking The Occasion
Anna and Hunter's waiter filmed the entire proposal, and when PIER 22 restaurant owner, Hugh Miller, heard the wonderful news, he offered to help the newly engaged couple with spreading the word. At the insistence of Hugh Miller and the PIER 22 events team, Hunter and Anna returned to the restaurant days later for an engagement photo shoot. Their engagement took place on a Friday, and Knuckles took off to Japan the following Wednesday.

Bradenton, Fla., Nov. 13, 2017 - PIER 22 announces its annual Boat Parade Viewing Party & Buffet scheduled to take place Saturday evening, Dec. 9, 2017. For many Palmetto and Bradenton area locals and visitors, the Manatee River Holiday Boat Parade acts as the unofficial kick-off celebration of the winter season. Boats take off from the Snead Island area promptly at dusk and make several stops along the river including in front of the PIER 22 terrace and patio dining areas.

With advance reservations, attendees of the boat parade party receive reserved event seating, a glass of celebratory champagne, and tasty eats including housemade selections such as pasta primavera, carved prime rib, house salad, peel-&-eat shrimp, fresh catch, miniature desserts and much more! The procession of brightly decorated boats is due to pass by PIER 22 at roughly 8:30 p.m. The restaurant is designated as a judging stop where officials rate the vessels based on criteria like creativity, spirit, musical entertainment and crowd reaction. Audience members are encouraged to participate, and cheers from the public are given heavy weight as scoring takes place. PIER 22 marketing director Tabatha Davis called the event child-friendly and lots of fun for the entire family; she also mentioned that the event has been known to sell out well in advance and suggested that tickets be purchased before it’s too late.

The Boat Parade Viewing Party & Buffet is a single seating event starting at 6:30 p.m. and ending with the parade finale around 10:00 p.m. Admission is priced at $69.95 for adults and $24.95 for children under 12. Due to little available seating, a limited number of reservations can be accommodated, and advance registration is required. PIER 22 Unveils Renovated Grand Ballroom

PIER 22, the landmark restaurant and party venue located in historic downtown Bradenton, celebrated its grand ballroom re-opening with a VIP cocktail hour celebration on Friday, Sept. 29. The event took place in the newly renovated event space, located on the second floor of PIER 22. Designed with a sense of sophisticated, old-Florida elegance, and with rich decoration executed in wainscoting, a suspended ceiling painted off-white, newly installed downlighting and sound-absorption drapery, the PIER 22 grand ballroom brings an exciting new entertainment option to the Bradenton area. Members of the public looking to schedule a venue tour of the renovated ballroom or any of the five private event
spaces should call PIER 22 Special Events at 941-748-8087.

The renovation also included increased kitchen storage and improvements to back-of-house service areas. Floating bars, a removable dance floor, a 6-foot projector screen with VGA/HDMI hookups, and room partitions are also in play. All nine of the Spanish-style windows have also been restored. However, the gem of the updated space remains the sweeping views of the Manatee River and its gorgeous sunsets. General manager Greg Campbell said, "While in the planning stages, we knew that we wanted to create a room that had character while also offering guests a fresh space for creating one-of-a-kind functions." The choice to maintain much of the 1920s design works to provide the ballroom with a unique personality. The use of a neutral color palette, room partitions, and a removable dance floor are key features that give the room universal appeal. With award-winning event planning and onsite culinary teams, the PIER 22 Grand Ballroom is an all-inclusive party venue and meeting space.

Jillian Price, the events manager for PIER 22, said, "We're beginning to see a lot of interest in the ballroom for corporate holiday parties, and of course, weddings." The PIER 22 Grand Ballroom has not seen a renovation since 2008, and with its new look and modern conveniences PIER 22 is hoping to become the go-to venue for local partygoers. Campbell also called his venue's downtown address a "prime location" and recognized Bradenton's ever-rising notoriety as a preferred spot for destination weddings and annual conferences. "This area is an ideal location for bringing large groups together; we're in the middle of the Bradenton entertainment district with hotels popping up everywhere and with two incredible airports right nearby. When event coordinators look around for a space that matches our incredible surroundings, they'll find that PIER 22 is it," Campbell said.

Guests will explore three centuries of Mount Gay Rum's history, craft, and sailing heritage as they taste their way through the smooth and complex flavors of the award-winning Barbadian spirit. Beginning Aug. 1 through Sept. 30, from 5-7 p.m. on Wednesday evenings, guests who share a Manatee River sunset photo using the hashtag #Pier22Sunsets, will receive a free Manatee Sunset drink.
 
Sunsets After Work celebrates the world-renowned waterfront sunsets at PIER 22 and rewards patrons for capturing and sharing their happy hour experiences online. To participate, guests must be at least 21 years old and show their sunset photo to their server before ordering (guests can post anywhere online using an original or shared photo as long as the hashtag #Pier22Sunsets is present). One free drink per customer with a purchase. The award-winning happy hour at PIER 22 includes $4 drink specials and scratch-cooked small plates for $6, $7 and $8 every day from 3-7 p.m.

Florida Cane Vodka Cocktail TastingShaken, stirred or served with a twist, happy hour lovers will delight in a PIER 22 Tasty Tuesday event that's full of flavor! Tuesday evenings at the waterfront restaurant from 5-7 p.m. are well known as a night to sample free wines and spirits from both near and far. For one night only, on Tuesday, July 25, 2017, the restaurant's top three bartenders will compete for your palate in an all out bar war!

Guests sitting in the Dockside Lounge or the Patio will receive samples of three handmade cocktails all created using quality fresh ingredients and vodka from Florida Cane, a micro-distillery located in historic Ybor City Tampa, Florida. Patrons can also purchase a full-size version of their favorite drink for a special price of $4, but not before casting a vote for the winning cocktail, which will later be added to the PIER 22 happy hour $4 drink menu for the remainder of summer!

Florida Cane Distillery owner Pat O'Brien will be available throughout the night to share about the history of the product and the future of craft vodka. The three competing PIER 22 bartenders will also answer questions and make suggestions for pairing the drinks with housemade appetizers, entrées and desserts from the PIER 22 dinner menu.

5th Annual Tourism Ambassador of the Year Award Goes to Executive Chef Greg Campbell
Friday, May 12, during the annual Bradenton Area Convention and Visitors Bureau National Tourism Week Celebration, Greg Campbell was announced the 5th Annual Tourism Ambassador Award winner.
 
Since 2012, individuals have been chosen annually to receive the Bradenton Area Tourism Ambassador Award. This honor, presented by Manatee County Commissioner Carol Whitmore and the BACVB Executive Director Elliott Falcione, recognizes individuals who have made a significant, positive impact on the development of Bradenton, Florida as a desirable visitor destination and have curated the best possible guest experience.
 
Greg Campbell, Executive Chef and General Manager for PIER 22 Restaurant and Catering received the 2017 Bradenton, Florida Tourism Ambassador Award at an industry event celebration held at the Bradenton Area Convention Center.
 
Chef Campbell learned the art of cooking at the hands of his French grandmother, Simone Hubert. Together, in her kitchen in Rhode Island, they made delectable creations always prepared with love and often using bacon. Throughout young adulthood, Greg continued to improve his culinary skills and expertise in restaurant operations. In 2006, Campbell accepted a position with PIER 22. 
 
Campbell and the PIER 22 team are known for their commitment to providing customers with outstanding service and quality scratch-cooked meals. Guests recognize the landmark restaurant as more than a refined culinary destination. For many patrons, PIER 22 is a material component in the way that they relax during a Bradenton, Florida vacation and essential to the way many locals and visitors celebrate the holidays. 
 
Upon receiving the Tourism Ambassador Award, Campbell stated "it's about taking care of people like they're your family and I try to emanate that in the restaurant. He joked about several bazaar guest requests but reminded his peers in tourism that it is "critical" to take care of all visitors to the Bradenton area no matter what it takes.
 
Campbell and his team can often be found working with Realize Bradenton to sponsor local tourists events like the Bradenton Blues Festival among many others. Campbell is a longtime member at large for Sarasota-Manatee Originals; he is also a Florida Restaurant & Lodging Association member. In 2013, Chef Greg Campbell received the honor of Best Chefs America. 
 
Campbell and his team work daily to provide visitors with memorable dining experiences that keep them coming back to the Friendly-City.  "I challenge myself and everybody here to do their best," Campbell remarked in his closing.  
 
Previous Tourism Ambassador Award winners have included restaurant and tourism industry leaders such as the CEO of the Chiles Group, Ed Chiles, and John Horne, CEO of Bradenton’s Anna Maria Oyster Bar and Manatee County Parks and Natural Resources Department Director Charlie Hunsicker.
 
The Bradenton Area Convention & Visitors Bureau promotes tourism to Bradenton/Anna Maria Island/Longboat Key area and the rest of Manatee County, including Palmetto, Holmes Beach, Bradenton Beach, Cortez, Ellenton, Myakka City, Ft. Hamer, Lakewood Ranch and Parrish, through domestic and international advertising, public relations and marketing efforts.

Eateries Then & Now Exhibit Shows a Flavorful Side to Bradenton History

There's plenty of food for thought at the Eateries exhibit going on now at the Central Library in downtown Bradenton.

The Central Library Bradenton Eateries Then & Now opening reception on Thursday, April 20 brought a large crowd of about 50 hungry people in search of food and information.  The event included menu samples from many local restaurants such as Fav's Italian Cucina, PIER 22, Sugar Cubed Pastry Lab and several others. Also on display, memorabilia such as old menus, dated advertisements, newspaper clippings and an informational slide show depict Bradenton as a foodie capital. 

The exhibit also reveals extraordinary changes within the restaurant industry and throughout the city of Bradenton including its landscape and culture. Librarian David Breakfield tossed around several ideas for the exhibit before landing on a show that would focus mainly on eateries in the downtown Bradenton area.

During the opening reception, both Breakfield and the library supervisor of information services, Ericka Dow, shared stories and answered questions from the crowd. A PowerPoint slide showing the Mediterranean fusion restaurant Ortygia sparked conversation about noticeable change in the area. "That area has turn of the century houses," Breakfield commented.  He said that the part of Bradenton known now as the Village of the Arts was once hard hit by drugs but has since been "greatly improved" and revamped as an artist's colony.

The riverfront restaurant PIER 22, a well known Bradenton landmark, also appears in the show. Photos dating back to the 1920s when the pier's building was first erected are on display and juxtaposed with images from the modern day.  You can also find print pieces, presumably from the seventies, that advertise the restaurant when it was just starting out.

Learning about the many changes to the area was "eye-opening," Tabatha Davis, PIER 22 director of marketing, said. "But what's more amazing is that much of the history has been preserved," Davis mentioned that building renovations like those to the pier and many others in the arts district along with the Central Library's robust digital collection of historic images help keep the past alive. "Many of the restaurants mentioned in the exhibit have deep roots within the community and have been serving guests for decades; it's a beautiful thing," Davis said.
 
The exhibit runs through July at the Central Library, 1301 Barcarrota Blvd. W.

PIER 22 was voted twelve-time People's Choice winner according to results released Sunday by the Bradenton Herald. Contest results suggest that guests of the downtown Bradenton restaurant and catering company enjoy PIER 22 for its culinary excellence, elegant but casual ambiance, incredible service and more! 
 
In the Food & Drink as well as At Your Service categories, PIER 22 won first place awards for Best Caterer, Best Brunch, Best Wedding Venue and Most Romantic Restaurant. PIER 22 was the contest finalist for All Around Best Restaurant, Best Happy Hour, Best Lunch, Best Seafood, Best Sunday Brunch, Best Waterfront Restaurant, Best Sushi and Best Wedding Planner.
